I think the orb should be as you made it out on the pictures, there's just something about a spherical orb I don't think will go well with it.
What fun is there in making sense?

Don't worry about that. I'm just making a first approach, this is only the base mesh, so I can sculpt over it all the shapes and details. I will think about optimization later, probably keeping the low poly layers and exporting the HQ as bump mapping. But it will take a while, so don't be impatient :D

I made this mesh today, and I'm not able to work this weekend (It's physically imposible to me since I haven't got my computer).
I'll upload a new pic when I consider that the changes deserve to be shown :)

I like how the sphere is distinctly different from an eye. Really great.
He kinda looks like a mini-Japanese dragon, except with legs. Which isn't a bad thing, IMO.
