You need to insert batteries first. The radio itself is unpowered when you first find it.

The helmet would only work if it "breaks" after 1-2 headshots. And there would be a massive screen shake & blur when that happens, along with a message saying something like "Your helmet saved you from a fatal shot, but it broke."

I think I found the pattern for this problem. It normally is there, even when you saved, but once you die and "quick" load, the buttons go missing.

Strange, if I go back to the menu and reload the save, they are all back.

The random blinking is actually very easy to do, so that would be another stage of the tiredness.

And there would also be an item that could help the player return to normal, but wouldn't work if 714's still worn. Maybe coffee from 294?

That's pretty much new. Probably the game failed to delete the save when you died.

And you can turn off the HUD in the options menu.
